What we focus on:
In second grade, we build on the skills that your child learned from Reader's workshop in Kindergarten and 1st grade. Specifically, we focus on phonics knowledge, accuracy (reading the word accurately), fluency (reading the book at a conversational rate), and comprehension (making text-self connections, text-text connections, and text-world connections). Students will read books decodable books and books from our classroom library. Your child is always welcome to bring a book in from home to read if they are particularly enjoying it and want to read it at school.
Reader's Workshop Format:
Reader's Workshop begins with a 10 minute mini lesson. I model a skill for students and then they are able to begin to practice the skill. Then, students read independently or with a partner to practice the skill. During independent time I pull small groups to practice skills or meet with students 1 on 1. After independent time, students share what they practiced with one another.
How you can help at home:
To help reinforce all that we learn at school, students should read at least 20 minutes each night at home. If you are not sure what books your child should be reading, I am happy to provide suggestions. Having your child read, reading with your child, and talking with them about what they are reading is one of the best ways to help them grow as a reader! You can also check out Lexia to practice accuracy, fluency, and comprehension skills at home.
