In second grade, students will learn to write a complete and coherent paragraph. We will begin to edit our writing with partners and on our own.
Writer's Workshop Format:
Writer's Workshop begins with a 10 minute mini lesson, similar to Reader's Workshop. I model a skill for students and then they are able to begin to practice the skill. Then, students write independently to practice the skill. During independent time I pull small groups to practice skills or meet with students 1 on 1. After independent time, students share what they practiced with one another. They may share the writing they have done thus far, or a specific part that highlights a skill learned in the mini lesson or a previous skill.
How you can help at home:
If students want to write at home, encourage them to. It is always good practice to read your own writing when you are finished, and this will help students become even better editors. Topics we cover in second grade are personal narrative, informational, opinion, and poetry.
